April 23rd 2020: Canonical, the publisher of Ubuntu, today announced the general availability of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, with a particular emphasis on security and performance.

Because Docker is open source software it’s not only free to use, but free to adapt, extend, hack, or build on. In this guide I cover installing Docker on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa), but the same steps may also work on older versions of Ubuntu, including Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Docker installed on your server or local machine, following Steps 1 and 2 of How To Install and Use Docker on Ubuntu 20.04. Step 1 — Installing Docker Compose To make sure we obtain the most updated stable version of Docker Compose, we’ll download this software from its official Github repository.

Ubuntu has reached the top of independent rankings of enterprise Linux security. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS applies Kernel Self Protection measures, assures control flow integrity and adds stack-clash protection for systemic forward-looking enterprise security.
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS also includes Secure Boot to protect against low level attacks and rootkits, often employed by Advanced Persistent Threat groups, and limits attack proliferation or ‘blast radius’ with strict snap confinement of key exposed applications on the desktop and server such as the local Kubernetes package MicroK8s. To mitigate social engineering attacks, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS introduces Fast ID Online (FIDO) for universal multi-factor and passwordless authentication.
Canonical works with platform partners to anchor security for the operating system in the deepest possible fashion in modern hardware capabilities. “Ubuntu 20.04 LTS pushes the envelope with the latest developments in security and scalability, ” said Robert Gomer, Director AMD Datacenter Alliances. “It adds native support for AMD Secure Encrypted Virtualization with accelerated memory encryption designed for data-in-use protection as well as high-performance scaling for AMD EPYC processors with 256 threads and beyond.”
WireGuard® is a new, simplified VPN with modern cryptography defaults. WireGuard is included in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and will be backported to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to support widespread enterprise adoption. “Including WireGuard by default in all recent versions of Ubuntu means that users will finally have a great out-of-the-box secure tunnel on Ubuntu,” said Jason A. Donenfeld, creator of WireGuard.
Ubuntu continues to be the OS of most public cloud workloads. Canonical recently launched Ubuntu Pro on public clouds, which broadens Ubuntu security maintenance to cover every single package in Ubuntu for a full ten years. Ubuntu Pro also includes FIPS and Common Criteria EAL to meet FedRAMP, PCI, HIPAA and ISO compliance requirements. “We’ve partnered with the Canonical team to think of new ways to solve the security challenges of tomorrow, and are excited that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is now available. In Google Cloud, Shielded VM hardening is enabled by-default on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, and now on 20.04 LTS – and at no additional cost,” said Nelly Porter, Lead Product Manager at Google Cloud.
“We’re excited to partner with Canonical to bring the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS innovations across our toolchain — from developers on WSL to scaling enterprise production deployments in Azure,” said John Gossman, Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft Corp. “In this release, we’ve made it easier than ever to manage workstation environments and to enjoy the long-term stability and security of Ubuntu Pro for Azure across a wide range of compute options.”
The new Windows Subsystem for Linux v2 in Windows 10 enables deep and direct integration of Ubuntu in Windows desktops and servers, both for cross-platform development and for sophisticated blended Windows/Linux production capabilities.
Ubuntu has become the platform of choice for Linux workstations. Canonical certifies multiple Dell, HP, and Lenovo workstations, and supports enterprise developer desktops. Machine learning and AI tools from a range of vendors are available immediately for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, along with 6,000 applications in the Snapcraft Linux App Store including Slack, Skype, Plex, Spotify, the entire JetBrains portfolio and Visual Studio Code.
Ubuntu is widely deployed as a Kubernetes host in public cloud and private infrastructure. It is also widely used for containerized operations in mainframe environments.

Accelerated computing is an essential element of new data centers, with GPU platforms from NVIDIA, as well as SmartNICs and FPGAs powering innovation in data science and machine learning. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS simplifies AI deployments, both in the data center and at the edge, with the NVIDIA CUDA software stack. “Enterprises are transforming their businesses with NVIDIA AI and data science solutions,” said Manuvir Das, head of enterprise computing at NVIDIA. “Developers and data science teams use the Ubuntu platform to support their most important work, and our collaboration with Canonical enables these industry innovators to get AI-powered insights from their data faster.”
Ubuntu is the leading open infrastructure platform, and has made significant inroads to the enterprise data center in recent years, in partnership with global hardware vendors and system integrators.

Docker is a combo of ‘platform as a service’ products and services which use OS virtualisation to provide software in packages called containers.
Containers contain everything an app, tool or service needs to run, including all libraries, dependencies, and configuration files. Containers are also isolated from each other (and the underlying host system), but can communicate through pre-defined channels.
This introduction to Docker video will give you a quick top-level overview of the tech and how it works:
Because Docker is open source software it’s not only free to use, but free to adapt, extend, hack, or build on. In this guide I cover installing Docker on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa), but the same steps may also work on older versions of Ubuntu, including Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
In this post you will learn how to install Docker from the regular Ubuntu repository, how to enable Docker to start automatically at system boot, and how to install Docker images and run them locally.
But this isn’t a deep dive. This tutorial is intentionally short and to the point. This is so you spend less time reading and more time doing.
Install Docker from Ubuntu Repository
There are two hard requirements to install Docker on Ubuntu 20.04:
- You need to have
sudo
access - You need to be connected to the internet
If you’re managing or setting up an Ubuntu server then you (probably) meet both of these requirements already, but do check before you begin.
Step 1: Install Docker from the main Ubuntu repository. Do this using the apt
command and the docker.io
package name (note: the package name is not simply ‘docker’):
Ubuntu will download the latest version of Docker from its archives, unpack it, and install it on your system.
Step 2: Make Docker start automatically on system boot:
Step 3: Test it.
Now that Docker is installed and running you should verify that everything is working okay. This can be done using the hello-world
app. From the command line run:
When you run this command you’ll see a lengthy message informing you that the ‘installation appears to be working correctly’.
But look closely at the message:
You’ll notice something interesting near the start: Docker was ‘unable to find’ the a ‘hello-world’ image. But instead of quitting it searched for and downloaded it from Docker Hub.
Which leads us neatly on to…
Step 4: Find and install Docker images.
Now you’re set-up the world (or rather the Docker ecosystem) is your oyster, and Docker Hub your port of call. Docker Hub is billed as ‘the world’s largest library and community for container images’. Any image available on Docker Hub can be installed on your system too.
Let’s look at how to do that.
To search for an image on Docker Hub run the docker
command with the search
subcommand, like so:
Download Docker Ubuntu 18.04
For example, I want to search for Alpine Linux on Docker Hub so I run docker search alpine
. A list of matching images (which match the term alpine
) will appear. I want the official Alpine image so I look in the OFFICIAL
column for the word OK
When you find the image you want to use you can download it using the pull
subcommand, For example, to install Alpine Linux I run sudo docker pull alpine
.
To run a downloaded image you need to add the run
subcommand and the name of the image, e.g., sudo docker run alpine
.
If you want to run an image as a container and get instant ‘interactive terminal’ shell access add the -it
flag. For example: I run sudo docker run -it alpine
and it drops me straight into the Alpine container, ready to work:
To exit the ‘interactive terminal’ type the word exit
and hit enter.

A couple of useful commands to know include docker ps -a
to list all images you’ve used (and see their container ID/name); docker stop {container id}
to close an image down; and when you’re done with a container remove it using the docker rm
command, again adding the the container ID/name at the end.
Going Further
In this guide we looked at installing Docker on Ubuntu 20.04 and getting official images installed. But this is only the beginning of what possible with Docker.
One possible avenue to explore is installing Docker rootless. This is an experimental feature and not (yet) easy to enable. But the effort required to set it up is worth it if you’re concerned about security and stability.
